Dobroslav and Miloserd: A Tale of Friendship, Greed and Forgiveness

Summary

An instructive fairy-tale parable for children and adults about the raccoon Dobroslav and the bear cub Miloserd. A story about how greed destroys friendship, and how sincere repentance and forgiveness restore it.

In olden times, in a dense forest beneath the shade of ancient pines and firs, at the foot of a mountain where a small wooden chapel stood with copper domes, there lived two inseparable friends. One was a raccoon named Dobroslav — quick, clever, with sharp little eyes and nimble paws. The other was a bear cub named Miloserd — kind and strong, with a gentle heart and always ready to lend a helping paw.The raccoon Dobroslav and the bear cub Miloserd meet in the forest

They had met as little ones, by a fast-flowing forest stream. Dobroslav, absorbed in catching small fish, slipped on a wet stone and fell into the cold water. The current caught the little raccoon and swept him toward the rapids. Little Miloserd, without a moment's thought, plunged into the stream and pulled his drowning friend to the bank. From that memorable day on, they became inseparable.

Dobroslav taught the bear cub to climb trees nimbly and to find forest treats in the most unexpected places: nuts in old hollows, sweet roots beneath fallen leaves, ripe berries on high branches. Miloserd, in turn, showed his friend where the juiciest blueberries and raspberries grew, which roots were safe to eat in lean times, and where edible grubs spent the winter. Together they explored every path in the forest; they knew every clearing and ravine, every spring and thicket.Dobroslav and Miloserd listen to the beaver

One spring, when the forest filled with birdsong and the scent of blossoming grasses, the two friends met old Bobroslav the Beaver by the chapel. He had lived there for many years, was wise and thoughtful, and knew countless stories about living with a clear conscience. Animals from all around came to him for advice in hard times.

"Come here, little ones," the old beaver called to them gently. "I want to tell you something important. See how closely you live now, how you look after each other? That's a wonderful thing. But know this: true friendship isn't tested in joy and abundance, but in hardship and need. Remember my words — whoever shares his last crust of bread with a friend carries love in his heart. But whoever hides a found treasure from a companion, thinking only of himself, loses that treasure, and his friend, and — worst of all — the peace of his own soul."

The friends listened closely and nodded, but they did not yet grasp the full depth of these words. It seemed to them that their friendship was unbreakable, that nothing could ever come between them.Autumn arrives

Summer passed, and autumn came. And that autumn turned out lean and unkind. The nuts ripened poorly, berries were scarce, and mushrooms hid so deep that hardly any animal could find them. The old inhabitants of the forest shook their heads, sensing that the winter ahead would be long and harsh.

Dobroslav and Miloserd began preparing for the cold early. They gathered everything they could find — every nut, every berry, every edible root. But no matter how hard they tried, their stores remained meager. Both understood that the coming winter would be a serious trial for them. The raccoon and bear cub's quarrel over greed

When the first snow fell and the forest lay under a white blanket, a true struggle for survival began. Food ran out quickly, and the frosts grew harsher by the day. In this difficult time, Dobroslav discovered a real treasure in the hollow of an old oak — an enormous hidden cache of nuts, dried mushrooms, and even honey in a small clay pot. These were the stores of an entire squirrel family, which had apparently not survived an early and unexpected cold snap.Miloserd takes everything for himself without thinking of his friend

There was so much food that it would have fed both friends until spring, with enough left over to help other animals besides. Dobroslav's heart leapt with joy — but at once a strange, dark thought crept into his mind:

"What if I hide this store just for myself? Miloserd is strong, he'll find food somehow. But what if the winter drags on? What if something unexpected happens? Better to play it safe — who knows what might come."Dobroslav is troubled by the friendship he has broken

The more the raccoon dwelled on it, the stronger his greed grew. He hauled all the stores to his own secret hiding place, and told no one a single word about his find.

Several days passed. Miloserd grew weaker and weaker from hunger. He hadn't eaten anything in three days, and his strength was leaving him. When the bear came to his friend for help, Dobroslav lied without so much as blinking:

"I haven't found anything, dear friend. I'm barely alive myself, about to freeze and starve."

Miloserd couldn't believe his ears. Could it be that his best friend, with whom he had shared everything equally for so many years, couldn't help him now in his time of need? But the bear was too noble to press the matter or accuse his companion. He only sighed heavily and went off into the forest to search for food on his own.The bear cub is left alone because of the raccoon's greed

And Dobroslav was left alone with his rich stores. But strangely enough, every nut tasted bitter to him now, every berry seemed flavorless. Sleep abandoned him, and joy left his heart. The raccoon realized: food without a friend isn't food at all, but torment. What good are the tastiest treats if there's no one to share the meal with? What joy is there in being well-fed, if a close friend isn't there beside you?

For several days Dobroslav suffered, watching Miloserd grow weaker and thinner. But pride and fear kept him from confessing his lie.Miloserd realizes he has lost his friend

"What will I say now?" he thought. "How will I explain why I stayed silent? Miloserd will know I betrayed him, and he'll never be my friend again."

On the fifth day, the raccoon witnessed a scene that shook him to the depths of his soul. Miloserd, weakened by hunger and barely able to move his paws, found a handful of dried rowan berries under the snow — just a small handful. And at that moment, a little bunny approached him, one who had lost his parents at the start of winter and now wandered the forest all alone. The bear cub Miloserd's repentance

The bear looked at his meager find, then at the hungry little one — and without a second's hesitation, gave all the berries to the bunny.

"Eat, little one," he said gently, stroking the bunny, who was trembling from cold and hunger. "You need to grow. I'll manage somehow."

Dobroslav's heart broke with shame and admiration all at once. Here he was, well-fed and warm, having lied to his best friend out of greed. And Miloserd, hungry and freezing, had shared his very last morsel with a stranger's child, simply because that little one had even less strength and even less chance to survive.Miloserd looks for a way to make peace with Dobroslav

The raccoon could no longer bear the torment of his conscience. Tears streamed down his little face. He rushed to his hiding place, gathered up armfuls of nuts and mushrooms, took the pot of honey, and ran to his friend, stumbling in the snow and dropping precious food along the way.

Seeing Miloserd, Dobroslav fell to his knees before him and, sobbing like a small child, told him the whole truth — about the treasure he had found, about his deception, and about how he had suffered all these days, watching his friend's suffering.

"Forgive me, Miloserd!" he wept. "I'm not worthy to be called your friend! I'm greedy, dishonest, selfish! Take these stores, they're rightfully yours, and drive me away — I've earned nothing but contempt!"The bear cub's sincere repentance before the raccoon

Miloserd listened silently to his friend's confession, then just as silently wrapped his arms around Dobroslav's shoulders, shaking with sobs.

"I've known about your hiding place for a while now," he said quietly, once Dobroslav had calmed a little. "A bear's keen nose caught the scent of nuts and honey on your fur. But I chose not to confront you — I waited for your own conscience to lead you back to me. For as old Bobroslav taught us: love is patient, love is kind; it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud; it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs; love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth; it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."Dobroslav and Miloserd reconcile

From that day on, the friends shared all their stores equally, and took in the orphaned bunny along with other forest creatures in need. They made it safely through the harsh winter, and when spring came, their friendship grew stronger than ever before. Dobroslav never forgot that lesson: true wealth lies not in what you have, but in what you're willing to give from a pure heart. And the greatest happiness isn't found in being well-fed and comfortable, but in the chance to share both joy and sorrow with those close to you.

The friendship of the raccoon Dobroslav and the bear cub Miloserd is restored

And wise Bobroslav, hearing of this story, only smiled into his gray beard and said:

"You see how mercy overcomes greed, and how love covers a multitude of sins. Blessed is the one who knows how to forgive, and blessed is the one who knows how to repent. For such is the path of every soul toward true happiness."

And to this day, in that forest, if you listen closely in the evening stillness, you can hear the old fir trees whispering this story to the young saplings, while the stream hums a little tune about friendship, forgiveness, and a love stronger than all human weaknesses.
